Just new to this forum and trying to get the hang of it. Proving hard to get a message posted. I'm a great Barnes fan, have read most of his work once, now going through re-reads. FP and History are the masterpieces, the rest ranges from very good (A@G, Sense) to good (Love etc)) but I am revaluating (upwards).

Welcome to the forum! I have yet to read "A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters" but I'm sure it is just as amazing as "Flaubert's Parrot". I do think that "The Sense of An Ending" edged out "Flaubert's Parrot" in terms of sheer structural perfection and deserves to be on the "masterpiece" list. "England, England" and "Before She Met Me" were brilliant in their own ways, but I actually enjoyed "Metroland" a little more. I actually loved "Pulse" but for some reason the stories in "The Lemon Table" are the ones that linger most vividly in my memory. I like the fact that Julian Barnes's works "stack"--the more of them you read, the deeper it gets. I read "The Lemon Table" before "Flaubert's Parrot" so the story "Knowing French" actually got even better once I'd finished the novel. I also read "Flaubert's Parrot" before "Metroland" so some of the references in that book didn't make sense until later.

I have just read The sense of an ending. I wonder if anyone know's if Julian had to pay to use the rolling stones line `time is on our side, oh yes it is.' Or whether he just put it in anyway?

Hello all,
I would like to take advantage of this forum to ask if anyone of you knows whether JB has ever visited Mallorca or any other of the Balearic Islands (Spain). I am doing work on anglophone authors who stayed in or have written about the Balearic Islands, and I located a reference in The Sense of an Ending, but it would be great to know for sure whether he has been here! Thanks very much for your help.

Can we get a discussion going about sense of an ending? Who was the father of little adrian?why did adrian really kill himself Mr. Julian Barnes is a genious and theere are some mean, rude people in this forum.."The Sense of an Ending" is my favourite book because it made me think a lot to in order to understand it. Here are some of my thughts: "BLOODY MONEY" were left to Tony, because Tony had slept with Mrs Ford. Only one time, that night with the sperm.. That;s why Mrs Ford cooked him the eggs next morning!!! But because Tony broke off with Veronica and since Adrian met Mrs Ford,it was Adrian who Mrs Ford claimed to be the father of the little Adrian. But it was Tony nd when Adrian discovered the truth,he killed himself... Tony slept with both the daughter and the mother and that's why the diary was left to him!!! So Tony has two sides, like MR.JULIA BARNES ,who looks weak and old but in fact he is playing with us,his readers... I think everyone should see the video at the universita Hull and discover the true Mr, Julian Barnes . UNICO, FORMIDABILE!!!
